korakiFanlore defines smarm as "a fanwork genre in which two or more characters are emotionally expressive, warm, and caring with each other". Smarm as a genre involves an element of intimacy that might normally be read as romantic or sexual, but is explicitly not viewed as romantic/sexual by the narrative and/or the characters.
So bring us your bed-sharing, your fond caresses, your forehead kisses, your tender hand-holding in the moonlight, your gentle hair-braiding, your careful wound-tending, your soulmates and soulbonds, your Pon Farr episodes, your emotionally charged lingering looks laden with deep meaning understood by these characters and these characters alone, your deep undying bonds of loyalty...
Smarm as a concept covers a wide range of tropes and elements, and we are defining it loosely for the purposes of this exchange. If the type of content you want to create and receive could reasonably be described by somebody, somewhere, as "smarmy", it's the right type of content for this exchange!
By signing up for this multifandom exchange, you're committing to create a gift for at least one person and receive a gift in return. Gifts can be either fanfiction (at least 800 words long) or fanart (with clean, finished lineart and on unlined paper if drawing traditionally), and must involve smarm as a central theme or element.

"&" relationships involving 2+ characters are eligible for this exchange.
Original Works are eligible for this exchange.
Crossovers are eligible for this exchange and may be nominated under "Crossover Fandom".
NOMINATIONS
Nominating is the process of electing relationships that can be requested and offered in this exchange. You cannot request or offer a relationship that has not been nominated.
You may nominate up to 10 fandoms and 10 "&" relationships per fandom.
All relationships must be nominated as "&" relationships for the 2021 round. "/"-only relationship nominations will be rejected. If you would like your smarm-y gift to include romantic/sexual content between requested characters, you may state this in the optional details of your request.
Relationships may be nominated as a combination of "&" and "/", for example Remus Lupin & Sirius Black/James Potter.
REQUESTS
You may request between 3 - 10 different fandoms, 1 - 10 relationships per fandom, and one or both of the media tags (fanart or fanfiction).
You may request a fandom multiple times, as long as there are at least 3 unique fandom requests in your signup overall.
If there is content you do not wish to receive, you must specify this content as a DNW in the optional details of your AO3 request. DNWs can include anything but may not be used to railroad your gifter into making one exact type of gift, and may not contradict your requests. If you list a DNW that appears to be contradictory you will be asked to elaborate before the DNW can be enforced.
Because the focus of this exchange is smarm, which is by definition not explicitly romantic or sexual in nature, you may DNW explicit romantic/sexual content for your requested relationship(s), but you may not DNW a lack of explicit romantic/sexual content.
If you request "Any" in any category, this indicates you are willing to receive content for any nominated tag. You may not request "Any" and then DNW certain tags. You may not request "Any" and ask for relationships or media types that are not in the tagset.
The 2021 round of this exchange uses "or" matching. Your gifter is only required to create something based on one of your requested relationships.
You are welcome to request explicitly stated romantic/sexual content in the additional details of your signup, but it will be your gifter's choice whether or not to include this.

The 2021 round of this exchange uses "or" matching. You are only required to create something based on one of your recipient's requested relationships.
If your recipient has requested explicitly stated romantic/sexual content in the additional details of their signup, it is your choice whether or not to include this.
ASSIGNMENTS
If you aren't able to be matched as a recipient, your requests will go out as an initial pinch hit.
If you aren't able to be matched as a gifter, we will make a post mentioning that we have unmatchable participants. Then we will send you an email asking you to add to your offers. If you are unable to add offers or fail to respond within 24 hours, your signup will be deleted.
If you have questions about your assignment and want to ask something of your recipient, do not contact your recipient. Instead, email the mods at smarmexchangemod@gmail.com, and we will act as an intermediary.
DEFAULTING
Defaulting means dropping your commitment to create your assignment. If you feel you can't create a complete gift for your recipient’s request by the deadline, please default ASAP so the mods can find a new gifter for that request and they can have plenty of time to work on it.
There are no penalties for defaulting, except the following: If you default, and the gifter assigned to you also defaults, you will not be sent out as a pinch hit.
To default, go to your Assignments tab on AO3. You'll see an option to either fulfill or default on your current assignment. Click Default, and the mods will be automatically notified.
PINCH HITS
A pinch hit is an assignment that, because of defaults or bad luck during matching, does not have a gifter assigned to it. Since everyone deserves a gift, these assignments need to find someone new willing to write/draw them.
Pinch hits will be posted to this Dreamwidth community. To claim them, comment on the PH post with your AO3 username and the number of the PH you want to claim. (Comments will be screened.)
Pinch hits are first come, first serve, and the mods will assign the request to whoever asks for it first. You will receive an email notification from AO3 that you have a new assignment if you successfully claimed a PH.
You do not have to be signed up for the exchange to claim a pinch hit.
TREATS
A treat is an extra gift you've made for someone you aren't necessarily assigned to. Treats do not have to meet the minimum requirements, but they must fulfill one of the recipient's requests, steer clear of the recipient's DNWs, and contain smarmy tropes/elements as a central theme of the treat.
You do not have to be signed up to write or draw treats, and treats can be posted at any time, even after the exchange is over.
To post a treat, click the "Post to Collection" button on the collection page. Post the gift as you would normally, making sure you put the username of the person you're treating in the "Gift this work to" box.
ADDITIONAL
Bigotry, harassment, and general assholery are categorically against the rules. General assholery includes but is not limited to kinkshaming, ship-bashing, deliberately gifting spiteful fic or art, and trolling requests or participants in this exchange. Ignoring this rule will lead to an immediate, permanent ban.
Much of the fun of smarm comes from its ambiguity! While "explicitly stated" romantic/sexual content is considered opt-in for this exchange, mods will err on the side of permissiveness in cases where the recipient has not opted in to explicitly stated romantic content. i.e. As a recipient you are not allowed to report your gifter for writing a fic about two characters sharing a bed, cuddling, talking about how much they love each other, and tenderly kissing each other's brows after one platonically sucks snake venom out of the other's inner thigh to save their life.
Participants in this exchange must be the legal age of majority in their jurisdiction.
